IRS Tesla mileage deductions: what US Tesla drivers need to track
Use your Tesla for self-employed work? Keep a clear record of where you drove, when, how many business miles you covered, and why each trip was for business.

If you qualify for the standard mileage method, the date of each trip determines which 2026 business rate applies.
For example, 100 eligible business miles driven in July 2026 could mean a $76 deduction. That reduces taxable income; it is not $76 in tax savings or a guaranteed refund.
You may instead use the actual expense method to calculate the business share of eligible vehicle costs. Eligibility depends on your circumstances, including prior depreciation choices and whether you own or lease the car.

Keep the details behind the deduction
See IRS Publication 463 for recordkeeping and transportation rules, including exceptions for qualifying home offices and temporary work locations.
Capture the drive. Review it. Export your records.
Taxel captures trips directly from your connected Tesla. Review new journeys in your Inbox, choose Business or Personal, mark commuting within Personal, and add a business purpose before exporting CSV or PDF mileage records.
US reports include recorded annual mileage by vehicle. Compare those totals with your annual odometer records and add missing journeys before filing: recorded totals represent a full year only when coverage is complete. Taxel does not decide whether a trip is deductible.
If you drive as an employee, your mileage log can also support a request for employer reimbursement. Follow your employer’s policy; reimbursement and a personal tax deduction are different things.
Make your Tesla mileage easier to review at tax time
Taxel is in private iOS TestFlight beta for Tesla drivers who use their car for work, with UK and US mileage reports.
